Crime is a term used to explain the acts of offenses and breakage of law.
Criminal acts are deemed to be the acts of humans after breaking the law of offending
others in a community. Crime is punishable by law and could attract penalties, such as
fines or imprisonment. Criminal activities are caused by various issues, such as drug
abuse. Moreover, crime can be an antecedent of depression or mental disorders that
affects the aspect of the decision-making of an individual. Family conflicts could also
cause criminal activities in a community (Riedel & Welsh, 2015). Significantly, racism
plays a crucial part with the victims who are seen as the perpetrators of criminal acts.
Politics, poverty, and overpopulation, such as living in slums, can cause an increase in
criminal acts within a community. Therefore, many issues lead to illegal activities that
pose a threat to the law enforcement department within a region.
Additionally, crimes can cause various problems in society. Criminal activities
are believed to be the cause of many problems in a community. For instance, crimes
can cause financial problems related to the loss of items and properties. Crime can
also be the leading cause of emotional distress, as well as pain due to injuries.
Psychological effects can be caused by crimes when an individual is affected by the
feelings after being the victim of a crime. Severe criminal acts, such as the death of a
friend or a family member, can lead to post-traumatic stress disorder and can also affect
someone’s social life (Hua & Yang, 2017). Other issues that can be caused by criminal
acts can include fear, anxiety, depression, grief, guilt, isolation, helplessness,
withdrawal, and memory problems. Crime also affects the broader community as the
law enforcement department has to deal with restlessness within a society.

Furthermore, the communities require leaders and law enforcement personnel,
who have a vision and an element of promoting peace and security amongst the rest of
the citizens. Effective leaders and law enforcement professionals must portray
competence, ethics, and skills that are suitable in enhancing law and order. For
example, police officers, among other law enforcement personnel, should be guided by
ethical standards and leadership skills when performing their duties. The skills and
competencies of law enforcement professionals should involve active aspects of
listening as they would be required to be keen in listening to different cases and
analyzing the issues presented by different people (Masood, 2017). Also, law
enforcement professionals should have basic education, which would be useful in
helping the personnel in making critical decisions as well as weighing different
perspectives of law. Police officers should also be resourceful and have the element of
investigating issues before coming into conclusions.
Law enforcement professionals should also possess critical thinking skills as
elements that would help in making viable decisions in policing activities. The
professionals should also have ethical leadership traits as well as possess the verbal
and non-verbal communication characteristics which would help in conversing with the
citizens. High physical fitness should also be an aspect of promoting law and order in
society (Dutelle & Taylor, 2017). Also, delegation skills, hierarchy awareness, honesty,
ability to motivate others, professionalism, caring, and the element of humor should be
considered as traits in an effective and efficient law enforcement leader, regarding the
development of policing activities. Consequently, the ethical considerations should help
the professionals in acting morally and avoid misconceptions such as racism and
