Research Methods(Assignment Brief)
Written Individual Assignment.
This constitutes 100% of the total unit mark
The aim of this assignment is to test your understanding and critical awareness of the
key components of quantitative research. More specifically, this assignment aims at
examining your knowledge with respect to your understanding and critical evaluation
of the key components required of an original and effective well performed research,
your ability to analyse and critique the validity and limitations of various research
methods as well as your written communication.
In doing so, you will have to design, conduct, analyse and interpret a small-scale
quantitative research project on a topic of your choice. You might like to use this as a
pilot study or just investigate something you are interested in.
The individual assignment should be divided into 5 parts and its structure should
be similar to an academic quantitative journal article.
Part 1: Introduction: research motive and problem analysis (around 200 words)
More specifically this part should include a very brief background to your research
Specifically,
• Why does this research need to be carried out?
• Is there a gap/debate in the literature?
Part 2: Research framework: literature and hypothesis (around 600 words)
More specifically this part should include a very brief review of literature to outline
relevant concepts. It should lead into an outline of your research questions or/and
hypotheses.
Part 3: Research Design: Data collection and Empirical Analysis (around 850 words)
This part is the core methodology hence it should show how you constructed your
questionnaire (why those questions – relate to your Part 2), which are your secondary
data sources, your sampling strategy, data collection procedures and how you imputed
loaded the data into SPSS
Part 4: Analysis: Analysis and discussion of results (around 850 words)
This part is the continuation of Part 3 hence it should include the analysis of your
collected data as well as the justification of the chosen statistical tests. It is vital that,
in this part, you relate back to Parts 1 and 2 (i.e. what research questions you wanted
to answer).
Part 5: Conclusions: Reflection of findings, limitations and ethical considerations
(around 500 words)
This part forms the concluding remarks of your work. Hence, it should report and
discuss your findings, possible limitations of your work as well as any research
implications and/or relevance for management.
It is strongly recommended that you start designing your questionnaire and/or
collecting your secondary data as soon as possible as it will not be possible to write
the assignment just before the deadline if you have not done the preparatory data
design and collection (i.e. questionnaire) beforehand. The minimum sample of your
respondents should not be less than 30 and the minimum questions should be 10
(around 2-3 pages questionnaire). You can have your classmates filling out the
questionnaire as part of the learning process. Beyond that, I strongly encourage you to
go out and recruit real respondents and let this be a real learning experience. The
questionnaire administration procedure would bring out many issues that were not
prominent until now. I expect you to finish the data collection process in time so that
you have enough time to write your assignment on time.
At this stage, I will recommend you use SPSS for your data analysis. However, if you
feel comfortable with other statistical packages, like for example STATA, you can do
so. If you need more help and time to practice the use of SPSS please us this link for
on-line tutorials: http://www.ats.ucla.edu/stat/. I am sure you will find them very
useful.
The maximum word count for your work is 3000 words (excluding submission of
your SPSS output file and your questionnaire). Please remember that the SPSS file
and your questionnaire will NOT be part of your word count.
Remember, we are aiming at your ability to identify how you undertook the research
project concerning data design, collection and analysis. Please make sure to complete
an ethics checklist before you undertake your research.
Your assignment will be marked using the following criteria
ASSIGNMENT: INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT- FEEDBACK FORM
OVERALL STRUCTURE(15%)
The work is structured coherently in line with the requirements where the
required parts are clearly visible. Spelling language and grammar is appropriate.
Word count clearly visible.
PART 1(10%)
This part contains a clear and brief introduction of the concept/topic. In the
initial motivation, the problem is relevant from academic and professional
perspectives, original, well introduced and placed into a context.
PART 2(10%)
This part contains a clear and brief description of the literature review. The
research is adequately grounded in the right literature. It clearly formulates
research objectives, research question and hypothesis.
PART 3(20%)
This part clearly includes the data collection procedure used to gather the
necessary data. It shows proper use of data awareness and data limitations. The
research method is well-argued, transparent and appropriate to answer the
research question.
PART 4(20%)
This part clearly includes the analysis of the data and sampling procedures. The
research data are adequately presented and analysed. The research results are
adequately interpreted and discussed. The findings lead to the design of a
solution.
PART 5(20%)
This part includes clear discussions and findings with possible research
limitations of the work. A critical reflection on the research is included.
Conclusions are based on research results. Ethical considerations of the research
are included.
REFERENCING(5%)
The work contains academic references and /or citations.
The Harvard Reference System is used for referencing and bibliography
ASSESSMENT GRADE DESCRIPTORS
The assignment has been designed to assess your understanding and critical
awareness of the key components of quantitative research. Thus, the key elements that
I will assess along are the demonstration of knowledge and understanding via the
content, and the ability to write with clarity and coherence, including the ability to
reference correctly.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
ASSIGNMENT 2: QUESTIONNAIRE
The questionnaire version you submit with your work will be the one I will be
evaluating. Therefore, make sure you pre-test it on someone before submitting
handing it in and starting your assignment.
I am very particular about the instructions listed below. While creativity is generally
encouraged during seminars, since most of you have limited (if no) experience in
writing an effective questionnaire, this is not a time to demonstrate your creative
skills.
Please follow the directions bellow diligently, you will get penalized for not following
them. The intention here is to learn the rules first, so you can break them later once
you master them. The questionnaire assignment will be organized as follows:
First page: your name, objective(s) and hypothesis.
Second page: title of survey (bold, center), followed by instructions for the
respondents, and immediately begin the questionnaire on the same page.
1. Please use Times Roman 12 font size.
2. Make sure there is a short but clear introduction of your work included on top of the
questionnaire
3. Write complete and clear instructions for potential respondents. Please, assume
nothing on part of the respondents.
4. In rating questions, use the Liker scales Use titles on each column of boxes.
5. The questionnaire should follow the questions in a chronological sequence. For
example, the questions about use of the product should follow the questions about
purchase of that product.
6. Try to bundle similar questions together (e.g., all the questions about the décor of a
particular fast food restaurant should appear together).
7. When asking close ended questions that have options of “Yes” and “No”, make sure
the first letter is capital, just as I wrote it here.
8. If a question is a branching one, make sure appropriate instructions for skipping the
subsequent question(s) is present. For example,
Question 8.1. Have you heard of hybrid cars? (Please tick the appropriate):
Yes
No (Please skip to question # 6)
If “Yes”, Do you think hybrids cars will become main stream in next 5 years? (Please tick
the appropriate):
Yes
No
1. Question 6. XXXXX XXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXX
Written Individual Assignment.
